Archives and Collections

Memory organizations, including archives, libraries and museums, collect and store a broad variety of documents and materials. These cover various data genres (audio, visual and textual). Data of a specific genre (e.g. modern art, sculpture, photographs) or producer (e.g. author, artist, composer), which professional or philanthropic organisations and individuals gather to store for the future are generally known as collections.

You should not have any difficulty, in humanistic disciplines, in finding stored data relating to your research topic. Furthermore, you can formulate your research aims so that archives and collections form a natural source of data for your research. The data genre stored in archives range from hard formats (originals of documents, paintings, photographs, materials or objects) to digital formats (suitable for Internet storage and more open accessibility). The challenge facing you in using archival data is to find materials from the multitude of materials available in various archives and collections, which are both reasonable and suitable for the research topic. The treatment of very old materials is a particularly difficult challenge to overcome.
